Europa League Final On Cliff’s Edge Between Atletico Madrid And Fulham

May 8th, 2010

After reaching the Europa League final, Fulham are now trying to finish their European adventure by winning the tournament. The Cottagers already made history when they made it to their first European final and now hope to ink another chapter in the record books. The club may not be as popular as some other teams despite having been in existence for 139 years but their fortunes have seen a turnaround since appointing Roy Hodgson as manager. The Englishman worked his way slowly from laying the foundations for a successful relegation escape in his first season in charge before guiding the club to a more stable ground. They then went on to secure a place amongst the English Premier League top ten in his next year in charge which ironically allowed them to be part of the Europa League where they now stand on the cusp of glory.

In order to win the Europa League final, Fulham must find a way to beat Atletico Madrid of the Spanish La Liga. That will not be an easy task with Atletico hailed as the La Liga’s four main clubs behind Real Madrid and Barcelona. With a fervant supporter base and years of experience going up against some of Europe’s best clubs for top domestic prizes, they are a reputable club. Any team will not fail to recognise or note their ability or history. It has not exactly been a smooth ride for Atletico in the tournament as they have had to mount recoveries from seemingly impossible positions in order to reach this stage. The club has made full use of the technical rule in the competition that states that if both teams in a specific tie are level on aggregate after both legs, the team that has scored the most number of away goals will proceed on. It may sound less than impressive to have qualified for a final this way but in the semi final, they did come out on top of one of the greatest teams in the history of football – Liverpool.

The clear favourites to win the final are Atletico Madrid where many are claiming that they need to just show up. It is hardly surprising for many fans to think that way considering the number of established international stars they have in their midst. Sergio Aguero is just one of the many stars who play for Atletico and the Argentinian’s resume includes being a priority target for Chelsea. Aguero has enjoyed a profitable relationship with Atletico’s other striker Diego Forlan in front of goal. Both players consistently score double figures every season and they are set to terrorise the Fulham defence. That would only arise if they can find a way past the Cottagers back four who are also well shielded by the midfielders lining up in front of them. Fulham manager Roy Hodgson has forged a strong side who are able to keep their focus throughout a game and rarely allow opponents to breach their well marshalled defence. The Premier League side does have a poor away record domestically but in Europe they have started to show potential with assured displays in their away legs in both the quarter and semi finals.

The major player for the Cottagers in this Fulham vs Atletico Madrid live streaming online match will be none other than Bobby Zamora. The striker has been scoring more regularly this season and many of his goals have been crucial ones. Zamora has many more qualities other than an eye for goal, with Hodgson frequently praising him for his ability to link up play with his team mates. He is the crucial player who bridges the midfield with the strikeforce. Many of the best European defences have not been able to keep him quiet and it was incredible to watch him make a mockery of Juventus’ back four when Fulham dumped the Italian giants out of the tournament. If he is fit and ready to lead the line in the Europa League final, it could prove to be Fulham’s greatest night in their century old history.
